A colorful original oil painting on canvas by the listed California artist Anton H. Dahl (1894-1967), signed in the lower right hand corner "Anton Dahl". The painting is also signed, titled and dated on the reverse side of the canvas in the artist's hand: "Anton H. Dahl, 1956, CHINA CAMP #3, Marin County, California." The frame also bears the name "DAHL" in oil paint which shows upside down at the bottom of the frame in the image of the back of the painting. The carved and painted wood frame is typical of many paintings of that period. While this painting would look great in a carved gold gilt "California" frame like those seen in many art galleries, I personally think it is a mistake to replace quality vintage frames, especially when they contribute so much to the charm and warmth of a painting as does this frame. The frame measures 26 3/4" wide by 22 3/4" tall, the canvas measures 20" wide by 16" tall. Anton Dahl apparently enjoyed painting China Camp, we purchased this painting together with another larger one which is not for sale at this time that is titled China Camp and dated 1956, the following year, but is numbered "6". China Camp was a Chinese shrimp-fishing village in the 1880's with nearly 500 people, most from Canton, China, living in the village which included a barber shop, marine supply store and three general stores. It is now a 1,640 acre State Park along the north shores of San Francisco Bay, called San Pablo Bay about 4 miles east of San Rafael, California. The area is rich in history including the Chinese immigrants, many of whom were lured by the promise of the 1849 gold rush, eventually there were 30 shrimping villages around the Bay Area by 1875. If you run a search for "China Camp" on Google, the first site listed shows a recent photograph of China Camp from the same vantage point. At the SF Gate website archives it says: "The Quan family, descendants of one China Camp settler, still live on the property where they operate a small shrimp business.... and the quaint Acme Cafe where they continue to sell cold drinks, sandwiches, shrimp cocktail and frozen sweets to visitors. On the storefront, the large painted sign proclaiming their crab "Best East or West" is also a remnant." Anton Dahl is listed in the 2002 "Artist's in California, 1786-1940" by Edan Hughes and the 2004 "Artists Blue Book" by Dunbier and exhibited in L.A. in 1947. Alton Dahl was born in Sweden Dec. 7, 1894 and moved to northern California in the 1930's. He was a veteran of World War I and World War II and died on June 15, 1967 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Palo Alto. The painting is in excellent condition with no damage or in-painting. The paint is rich in color with no cracking. Please see the close-ups showing the smaller fishing boats in the foreground, the people along the shore and the fishing boat near the pier. Whether you collect California art or are interested in China Camp specifically, this is a good opportunity to purchase an interesting and pleasant painting with Bay Area history.
